Ouachita Baptist University (OBU) is a nationally recognized Christian liberal arts university committed to promoting health and wellness for both students and the broader Arkadelphia community. Through its Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Department of Exercise Science, and the Elrod Center for Family and Community, OBU provides targeted health programs that address childhood obesity, diabetes management, senior wellness, concussion education, and adapted fitness. Recognizing the growing need for accessible recreation and wellness resources, OBU has expanded its facilities and programming to serve more individuals, particularly those facing financial barriers to preventive care.
OBU is using NMTC financing to develop and renovate campus-wide recreation and wellness facilities, enhancing its ability to provide structured exercise, nutrition education, and wellness programs for children, seniors, low-income families, and individuals with disabilities. The project directly supports the Children’s Health BMI Program, Arkadelphia Diabetes and Nutrition Program, Weight Loss Consults, Rural Access Children’s Concussion Care Program, and Stay Strong/Stay Healthy initiative, among others. Additionally, the expansion allows OBU to re-establish Special Olympics track and field events, create dedicated space for adapted fitness programs, and provide enhanced wellness opportunities for seniors through the Elder Serve program.
