Oakwood University, a historically Black Seventh-day Adventist institution located in Huntsville, Alabama, used NMTC investment to support the development of the Community Health Action Center as part of its Healthy Campus 2020 program, a strategic initiative established to address poor health outcomes and preventable diseases among students and to help address health, food and job insecurity faced by low-income residents of Northwest Alabama. The financing supports three key construction activities: development of the Community Health Action Center to address medical and food inequities, a 39.5% expansion of the University's Market for fresh foods and local goods, and renovation of Peters Music Hall to provide high-quality arts programming for both students and Huntsville's low-income residents.
This project addresses food insecurity, medical access, and workforce training by providing a centralized hub for healthcare services, fresh food distribution, and economic empowerment programs. The center also serves as a teaching facility where students and healthcare professionals collaborate to improve community wellness.
